“Time is..” was initially influenced by the concept of aging with wisdom personified in the eyes. They capture the heart and soul and express a lifetime of experience in just one look.
In my research, I found a poem written by Henry Dyke and named this piece after the poem. The meaning resonated with me and all I initially attempted to portray in the rustic look of the painting and the eyes of the subject.
Dyke says time is too slow for those who wait. In contrast, time is too swift for those who fear it. Those who are grievous, feel the time is too long for them. Whereas, those who are rejoicing in the ripples of life, feel the time is too short on earth. But those who love, don’t preoccupy their minds with such thoughts of time. Love is eternal. Hence, lovers don’t care much about time. And time has no control over them.
Time Is… however you choose to experience it.
Combining collage, mark making, inks, and acrylics on oils on canvas, with layers loosely added to create a rustic and raw effect keeping many of the initial charcoal layers evident so as to depict the many transitions through time.
