I am an Adelaide based collage artist who works primarily with tissue paper and Japanese washi paper. My pieces of work are often abstract interpretations of the natural world.
I have long been interested in, and influenced, by traditional and contemporary Japanese art, design and culture and as a Japanese language teacher, and student of Japanese studies, I have made numerous trips to Japan over the years which have helped guide my love of simplicity, order and deep respect for nature that permeates the Japanese aesthetic.
My interest in using paper as an art medium began after a purchase of several sheets of Japanese washi paper in Tokyo. On returning home I wondered how to best display such delicate paper and there began my experimentations with paper and collage.
Tissue and washi paper continue to be my medium of choice because of their often translucent qualities, the textures that can be created and at other times provided by specific papers, the colours that can be achieved with often a limited colour palette and the design parameters that using tissue and washi papers necessitate.
