This painting is part of a series in which I am exploring my relationship with nature, and the feelings that a beautiful vista - be it the coast, lake or the mountains - evokes. I start by collaging organic shapes made with gelli plate prints, then layer paint to build up texture and mood.
This piece is titled "Beneath," capturing the lusciousness of the cool water in the lake we visit in the heat near where I live. With layers of rice paper and other collage materials underneath, beneath the sparkling water is loads of texture and mystery.
I wanted to capture not just the surface but the depths—those hidden shades of blue that seem to pull you into another world. I invite you to join me in enjoying this contrast, because there’s nothing like the cool embrace of a lake on a sweltering summer’s day.
