Rune Hugo, the Danish subject, is lovingly known by some expat friends as ‘The Great Dane’, which quickly became shortened to The Great. The Danish flag painted on the edges of the canvas is a less than subtle nod to Hugo’s nordic roots and provides a bold, graphic contrast to the stark setting of the painting. Peering into the light, with a look of determination, Hugo looks as if ready to set off on an exploration.

Artist Bio
Born and raised in the States where I studied studio art, I’ve spent the last 19 years overseas in London, Melbourne, Singapore, Darwin, and Berlin. Back in Melbourne for six years now—with Australian citizenship—I’m painting in the city that feels like home while working part time as graphic designer and pursuing other artistic practices in my spare time.
I explore both portraiture and still life, though I consider myself predominately a portrait artist and am at the front end of what feels like a life-long relationship with self-portraiture. I’ve been a finalist and semi-finalist in several painting prizes including the Archibald Prize in 2025.
