Artwork Description

This is the second piece in this series, which lived a long time in my head before I had any sense of urgency or motivation to paint any of it. This painting was inspired from a particularly beautiful drone shot taken by my husband on a trip a few years back up the coast.

It’s not very well known how valuable Pink Lake is, beyond its allure as a popular tourist destination, but the Department of Environment and Conservation ranked it as a wetland of national importance.

The wetlands themselves are home to a variety of diverse flora and fauna but these are constantly at risk by the potential over exploitation of aquaculture, being in close proximity to both an algae farm and a garnet mine. I wanted to draw on this through this work, using mixed media to layer the salt-edged roads within the algae farm, creating something starkly beautiful, yet imperfect. What I hoped to convey with the different colours depicted is the swinging and uncertain balance that is the relationship between man and natural environment, where most often nature loses.

Artist Bio

With 17+ years of wide-ranging Arts and Culture industry experience, across publishing, media and music to curation and management of digital and non-digital exhibitions, including overseeing independent artists, signed gallery artists, artistic coordination and installation management, Brooke's recent move into abstracts, landscapes and typography sees her for the first time at the forefront of exhibitions, rather than coordinating from the background. An emerging artist, yet experienced curator, Brooke's previous commissioned work can be found in private collections across Australia. These are her first series publicly released for sale.

Previously Artistic Team Leader and Head Curator of a Perth based gallery since 2018, Brooke was responsible for all annual shows and exhibitions, however currently acting as an agent for Birli Press, and partnering with large scale visual and sculptural artists, she can be found focusing on her own portfolios and working on her most current environmental series, while contributing to the public art space.

Her work is inspired by the Australian landscape, the stories behind it and the people who surround her. In particular she likes to travel with her large family, making their way across ancient landscapes, and feeling that deeper sense of relationship and belonging. With a deep respect and love for those who came before, and the interrelation felt through the land; Brooke's work often centers around an emotion and seeks to evoke a soft feeling of calm connection.
