Artwork Description

‘Snorkelers at Little Bay Beach, NSW” explores the natural forms of the ocean and the complex interactions between the shoreline and water. It was important for me to capture the sense of endless lines weaving throughout the scene. I purposefully shifted the viewpoint away from the horizon to emphasise the intricacies within the chains of rippling waves, observing how their repeating lines become intertwined with the fluid curves of the rock. The snorkelers depicted coming up for a break at the waters surface create a calming anchor point where the viewers gaze pauses for contemplation of the pairs exploration within such a vast environment. I have laid down each pencil marking with considered intention towards capturing realism whilst also stirring the energy of the landscape to make the onlooker feel as though they are standing there themselves.
The piece is float mounted - where the artwork sits above the matte with a small raise beneath the paper. This contemporary technique allows the work to be displayed in its entirety whilst also creating eye catching shadows behind the paper. The frame and matte are both white.
This artwork was a finalist in the Kedumba Drawing Award 2024.
