Artwork Description

'Collision' was created shortly after the devastating floods that wreaked havoc on our region in Northern Rivers NSW last year. I had relocated to a friend's house after mine was flood affected, and on their lounge room floor in their small apartment, I laid out a canvas and just started adding layers upon layers. This piece for me represents a 'collision' of many different emotions at that time. Grief, fear, love, faith, sadness, confusion, and gratitude were some of the feelings that flowed through me and my brushes, and onto the canvas.

Artist Bio

- About the Artist -

Calliope, an intuitive abstract artist hailing from the picturesque Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, Australia, weaves her emotions into vibrant canvases. Her artistic journey defies convention, fueled not by formal training but by an unwavering passion for self-expression.

- A Canvas Unfolding -

No Formal Training: Calliope’s artistic odyssey began with a mere whisper—a couple of art classes during her school days. Yet, these modest beginnings couldn’t quell her hunger to create. She embarked on an independent exploration, driven by curiosity and an innate need to communicate through color and form.

Raw Canvas, Boundless Expression: Calliope’s preferred medium is a raw canvas—an unadorned surface that invites her to pour raw emotion onto its fibers. With a fearless spirit, she layers mixed media upon this blank slate, coaxing stories from chaos.

Vibrant Palette: Her palette dances with life. Vivid reds, electric blues, and sun-kissed yellows collide, each hue a brushstroke of feeling. Calliope’s colors are not chosen; they emerge organically, like wildflowers in a sun-drenched meadow.

Unique Creations: Every piece she creates is a singular entity—an echo of her inner landscape. The canvas becomes a mirror, reflecting the highs and lows, the whispers and roars. Each stroke is a conversation, a dialogue with the universe.

- Art as Therapy -

Healing Brushstrokes: For Calliope, art transcends aesthetics. It’s a sanctuary—a place where big emotions find release. When words falter, her brush, spatula, and hands speak. The act of creation becomes a balm for her soul, stitching together fragments of thought and feeling.

Clearing the Mind: Amid the chaos of existence, the canvas offers clarity. As she blends colors, she untangles the knots within. Art becomes a meditation—an invitation to silence the noise and listen to her own heartbeat.

Expressing the Inexpressible: Some emotions defy language. Calliope turns to her palette when words fail. In each stroke, she whispers secrets, shouts defiance, and embraces vulnerability. Her art becomes a bridge, connecting her to others who seek solace in shared expression.

- Legacy in Colour -

Epworth Hospital Art Collection: Calliope’s work has found a home within the Epworth Hospital Art Collection. Here, her canvases hang as beacons of hope for patients and their families. They remind us that healing isn’t always clinical—it can emerge from the strokes of a brush.

A Journey Unfolds: Calliope’s story continues—a canvas unfurling with every sunrise. She remains an artist unbound by convention, guided by intuition, and fueled by the inexhaustible well of human emotion.
