Artwork Description

Oil on canvas

Signed on the front.

I live on the beautiful but isolated island in Tasmania, the Flinders Island. There are magnificent mountains, over 120 pristine beaches, rock formations with red lichen. A paradise to live in and a constant source of inspiration for an artist's soul. The island is also a place of sadness where in 1834 some 134 Tasmanian aboriginals were housed, ostensibly for their own safety away from dangers to them on the mainland Tasmania. Their health failed in accommodation unsuitable to them. They died here, at Wyballena, longing for their own country. The cemetary is a very sad place. In the past the graves were marked and identified, but now there is only bare grass and thistles. This work is influenced by the history and sadness of Wybalenna, depicting the dozens of graves and the longing for home.

My island has many islands, This is a print that I found quite interesting, the same image printed over and over, resulting in many islands. Just as my island that has over 120 pristine beaches. Our families are close to our hearts, always. No matter how far we are from them.
I love the quirky buildings and skyscrapers of Melbourne, always an inspiration when I go there. This work is about the skyscrapers and other buildings, lots of windows. Turn the work which ever you want it is still readable as the buildings and their windows. That's what abstract art is about, one can turn the canvas around, but each view should work for itself. At least that is my view....I love Melbourne, its its skyscrapers of all different shapes and sizes. Its culture, shows and vibrancy. This work is very much influence by Melbourne.
