The practice of painting in nature, in direct relationship with the living world, remains a source of reverence. I can’t wait for our next camping trip so I can set up my outdoor studio!
In my research, “Seeing Her Stories”, I wrote about painting from life:
‘The unmediated exchange that occurred when painting from “life”, in situation, felt dynamic and energising. The element of time was intensified. I felt a heightened awareness and sense of being in the moment, as well as an openness to my surroundings, to the subtle shapes and forms, and a sensitivity to changing light and the relationship between myself and the subjects I was painting...
These paintings from life became records of a lived encounter occurring in real time. They gave form to the sensory information I attuned to as I interacted with both people and the material world, and also became an expression of the energy of connecting with the “other”.’
