Artwork Description

Constructional No.1, V4 in 3D was created using the latest digital technologies. I experiment with my photographic images through methods that displace the visual content through the digital process. I then deliberately disrupt the physical surface of the print. Pushing traditional boundaries and limitations of colour, form, and texture, the image and print’s surface is restructured by hand-cutting and layering. The image separated into parts of its compositional elements becomes a disrupted 3-dimensional illusory space, one that liberates its potential to transform the original photographic image into an abstract visual fantasy.
What was originally seen in the camera viewfinder becomes other by digital and analogue/ hand-crafted processes. The deconstruction of the (often) banal content of the single photographic image is now transformed through digital manipulation and cutting, to separate and react against the limitations of conventional photography.

This is a true labour of love, taking approximately 270 hours to complete the templates, hand-cutting nine layers, measuring and cutting the foam core that separates each layer, then mounting each one to create the three-dimensional photo.

Artist Bio

My theory in practice DeConstructed Photography is an experimental process that explores the potential of digital technology and the physical properties of the photographic print.
The reductive process begins with one photo; the main subject is isolated using a set of rules that deconstruct it to many base forms. The base forms are now patterns used to reconstruct the image while incorporating contemporary post processing techniques and personal aesthetics. The end result is an undetermined image based only on its original photographic data.

Continuing the process, the physical properties of the printed image are deconstructed again by utilising techniques borrowed from the traditional cottage craft, paper tole. The final piece comprises up to eight layers of the same image, all hand cut using different templates, then stacked and permanently mounted. The resulting artwork brings not only a new perspective on the original photo but the physical properties and capabilities of the print are pushed beyond its own boundaries.

My objective is to continue the experimental process to further breakdown the boundaries of both the visual and physical properties of the photographic print.
