Artwork Description

When I lived on a conservation property up in Rylstone in NSW there were many blackberry plants on the property with delicious fruit each summer which these red browed finches dined on every day. It was so great hearing them chattering while they ate. Lovely memories for me of a very special place.

Artist Bio

Carmel has been an artist for over 30 years, working in watercolour, acrylic, oils, charcoal and pastels. She is a founding member of Artists of Wallambah, on the mid north coast of NSW.

Carmel completed several years at Randwick TAFE Art course and completed the Botanical Illustration Course at the Sydney Botanic Gardens. More recently she completed the Contemporary Art Course online with the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

She exhibited with the Balmain Waterlilies for many years, and in Gallery 47 in Rylstone when she lived there for 20 years on a large bush property adjoining the Wollemi National Park. She was a participant in the contemporary art festival Cementa, in Kandos, where she gave a talk about her work.

Carmel is drawn to light and its effects on any subject. Her interest and dedication to Australian flora and fauna is reflected in her drawings and paintings of the Australian bush. She presently lives on 35 acres of bush in Nabiac, NSW where she has an art studio and runs a native plant nursery. She has recently placed her property, “Gulu Guulabaa”, under a Voluntary Conservation Agreement.

She finds being in the bush and creating art as both deeply spiritual experiences.
Her artistic philosophy is to engender a love of the Australian bush and its biodiversity to all who view her work.
