Artwork Description

This photograph was taken in Sydney in 2021 and captures a quiet yet unsettling scene of discarded rubbish illuminated by low, dramatic light. Plastic bags, fallen leaves and everyday waste gather in a moment that feels both accidental and carefully composed by chance.

The work reflects my interest in the tension between beauty and neglect, and in how light can transform overlooked spaces into something emotionally charged. Through a cinematic use of shadow and colour, the image invites the viewer to pause and reconsider what is usually ignored.

Artist Bio

Carmen Alcedo is a visual artist and photographer based in Adelaide, currently an Artist in Residence at The Mill (March 2025 – March 2026). Her practice explores memory, identity, and migration through layered photographic work, blending contemporary and archival images to create emotionally resonant narratives. Her current residency allows dedicated studio time to consolidate research, experiment with new techniques, and develop a cohesive body of work reflecting both her own migration journey and, in the next phase, the experiences of other migrants. Carmen’s work bridges personal and collective perspectives, fostering dialogue, empathy, and reflection. She has exhibited nationally and internationally, including solo and group exhibitions in Adelaide, Paris, Sydney, and Spain.
