I am a contemporary landscape artist based in Melbourne, Australia working primarily with oils. I studied for a Bachelor Degree of Fine Arts at De Montfort University in Leicester England. Feeling very disillusioned after I graduated I did not pick up a paintbrush again for the next ten years. I moved to Australia in 1999 and was lucky enough through friends to come across a local painter who also gave lessons. Then began my painting journey and I began to discover who I was as a painter. I was driven to find my voice and how to put that voice on to the canvas. It has been a long and wonderful journey and now some twelve years later I feel that I have found my own unique style.
I have always been a landscape painter and I have been lucky enough to have travelled through a lot of Australia, camping around the Kimberleys, along the Gibb River Road and recently Cape York. I grew up in suburbia, England so I am in awe every time I travel within Australia. I never get over the feeling of how big the sky is or how beautiful the light is or how the seemingly empty bush can be alive with colours and textures. I am deeply inspired to paint what I see and feel. My love of painting comes from the physical act of applying paint onto the canvas. I always say I paint in colour and my greatest joy is mixing a beautiful tone that sings and vibrates on the canvas.
There is nothing like the anticipation of a blank canvas. The endless possibilities, the stories and journeys that as an artist you are about to go on.
I try to set out with no pre-conceived ideas of how the journey will end. For me painting is a source of wonder and every brushstroke leads the painting along, each dictating the meaning and spirit of the painting. An artist has to be very patient sometimes waiting for the painting to speak and reveal its story. Each painting has a unique journey that draws on many sensations and motions to reveal an image that hopefully connects with the viewer
Thank you for your time and consideration.
