Artwork Description

For me, drawing is about observation - looking and seeing. I am inspired by
observations of plant forms and the interaction and interdependence in the botanical world. I'm interested in detail - the small picture rather than the big picture and I enjoy getting to know the subject I am drawing through close observation. William Blake said 'nature shows it's power in minute particulars' and I believe this to be so. Drawing is a way to make sense of a complex world and nature provides a rich bounty of inspiration.

Artist Bio

Based in the northern Rivers of NSW, Carolyn had been an internationally acclaimed jewellery designer and cloisonne enameller for more than 40 years when in 2014 she began concentrating on drawing. Her work has always primarily been about responding to the natural world - the beauty, complexity and interconnectivity that exists all around us, both seen and unseen.

She says 'My drawing practice is about looking and noticing. I enjoy the quiet contemplation of being present in the moment, and the pleasures of interpreting the visual into two dimensions. I am inspired by observations of plant forms and the interaction and interdependence of life forms. I love details!

I am attracted to the simplicity of pencil on paper. No frills no fuss. Just the hand and eye of the artist - and a direct and honest response to the subject matter. There is an immediacy in drawing - using the generosity of graphite to express a full range of dark and light, detail and broad stroke, observation and emotion.

To me, a good drawing will combine something of the hand and mind of the artist along with some essence of the nature of the object being drawn and will have an authenticity of artistic expression.'
