Artwork Description

In Outback Sentience, I wanted to capture the quiet, pulsing life of the land and those moments when the outback feels almost aware of you, watching and breathing in its own unhurried rhythm. The soft grey sky opens into a stretch of muted green scrub, a place where distant trees dissolve into the horizon. Beneath that lies a band of deep umber earth, rich and powerful, anchoring the landscape with its quiet strength. My scattered marks and loose gestures drift across the surface like whispers of movement, tiny traces of flora, dust, wind, and memory.

The foreground glows with warm terracotta and burnt apricot tones, colours that to me feel alive with heat and story. I worked instinctively here, letting the brush create pockets of energy with small bursts of yellow, russet, and ivory that suggest life emerging from the soil. These marks may seem simple, but each one is a response to the land itself, to the way it speaks through texture, colour, and silence.

This piece is my emotional translation of the outback’s presence and its feel of sentience. It’s not just a landscape but a living, breathing place that holds history, resilience, and a quiet sort of wisdom. When I painted it, I felt connected to that vast stillness, that deep heartbeat beneath the surface, and I hope viewers feel some of that same reverent pull.

The canvas is an original piece and comes with d rings and wire ready to hang. The piece is Unframed and sides are painted in a crisp white to set off the artwork. The work is created in acrylic. All work has been sealed and varnished for protection

Artist Bio

Carolyne Jane
THE BLOCK ARTIST - 2024 and 2025

I was absolutely thrilled that two of my works were again selected to feature in this year’s series of THE BLOCK in Daylesford 2025 and last year in THE BLOCK Phillip Island 2024! It is an incredible honour to be part of such a well-loved show, and I can’t begin to express how exciting it was to see my art displayed every night during contestant interviews.

I am an abstract artist and I find incredible inspiration from the rocks and sea around Phillip Island. I am very drawn to the changing colours of the sea and the beautiful colours of the red rocks and natural diversity of the island which often tend to end up being the main subjects for my art. I have a real passion for colour and enjoy experimenting with the use of different colour combinations to create my work.

My works are totally intuitive and I pour all my energy, passion and emotion into each unique piece I create. My works are mainly acrylic with some mixed media of charcoal and pastel and I adore painting on big canvases.

My artistic Journey originally saw me working with oils creating contemporary seascapes but as my art evolved I found myself wanting to really let go and create from within. I love being able to create from something as simple as a mark on paper or a thought and let the canvas tell me what it wants.

Lately I’ve found myself going a bit wild with my brushstrokes as the crazy madness of creating takes over. My passion is colour and I love experimenting with different colour palettes which keeps my works interesting and exciting. I truely am on a journey of exploration with my work.
