I’m really drawn to the contrast in this work between the glowing, sun-baked oranges and ochres of the landscape and the deep, earthy tones that anchor the foreground. I’ve captured the Australian outback in a very intuitive way, allowing the colours, marks and textures to build a sense of heat, distance and rugged beauty. The scattered trees and rolling terrain give the landscape a wonderful sense of openness, while the flashes of brighter colour bring an almost electric energy to the scene.
For me, Outback – Vivid is about the intensity of the Australian landscape with its light, colour and raw character. I’ve deliberately kept the brushwork loose and expressive, letting layers of paint and spontaneous mark-making create movement across the canvas. The result is a landscape that feels both familiar and imagined, capturing that unmistakable feeling of standing beneath a vast Australian sky and taking in the richness of the land.
