This portrait of my grandmother examines the fragility of memories and held in the human mind. The attention to detail in Reminiscence captures the gentle, soft personality of Aukje and manages to maintain a painterly feel despite the photo-realistic quality of the painting. The sitter is captured in a moment of wistful recollection over a cup of tea, though the memories are delicate and fleeting.
This painting was built up layer by layer in oils, working from a monochromatic under-painting through to delicately applied layers of colour and fine detail. This piece has been a labour of love, and brings a sense of tranquility now that I can sit and enjoy it, reminiscing about times gone by.
Float framed in Tasmanian Oak which complements the warm flesh tones of the subject, this canvas is equipped with a wire and ready to hang.
This artwork was selected for the 2020 exhibition 'Shelter' with 33 Contemporary gallery, curated by Dr Samuel Peralta. It has since been selected for inclusion in the Lunar Codex project, and will be archived on the moon's surface via the Nova-C lunar lander.
