The painted self-portrait offers a very analogue method of self reflection and analysis, in a time dominated by snapshots, selfies and the highly curated digital personas that shape the ways in which we see ourselves.
With the current climate of uncertainty and isolation permeating our lives, it’s the perfect time to delve into processes of introspection and self discovery.
This is a self portrait painted at the beginning of the global pandemic. I hope for it to convey an authentic reflection of myself encapsulated within this strange moment in time.
In times of great anxiety I take refuge in the painting process itself, and the comforting stillness and meditative state of mind that it brings about. A small comfort which parallels that of wrapping oneself in your favourite blue scarf to keep out the cold.

Artwork Description
Artist Bio
Casey Thornton is a figurative realist oil painter from regional Western Australia, with a keen interest in the techniques used by the old masters. Her keenly observed and highly detailed works aim to capture an authentic representation of the world, and invite a quiet moment of pause, introspection and welcome respite from a constantly ‘switched on’ world.
Thornton studied a Bachelor of Humanities (Fine Art) at Curtin University, and in recent years has studied at The Art Academy in Adelaide. Her artworks are held in private collections across Australia and overseas, and one piece has been selected for inclusion in ‘The Nova Collection’ lunar time capsule.
