Artwork Description

Rocks illuminated with unconventional light sources at night. I am influenced by Impresionism and Chiaroscuro. The brushed aluminium metal surface will bring the solidity of the rocks, filling the white areas with the metal silver surface.

Artist Bio

Cătălin Anastase is a Sydney-based visual artist who sculpts with light.
Using unconventional light sources, he constructs images that emerge from darkness, shaping form through illumination rather than pigment.

Influenced by his father, an artist, and shaped by a background in performing arts, Anastase approaches each work as a staged encounter. A single beam of light becomes the point of connection between artist and subject — revealing presence, tension, and narrative within the human form.

His practice explores facial expression, gesture, and abstract structure, seeking the extraordinary within the familiar. Light functions as both subject and medium, carving depth, isolating emotion, and transforming space into theatre.

A graduate of UNATC – National University of Theatre and Film, Bucharest (1996), Anastase’s experience as actor, puppeteer, and director informs the dramatic minimalism of his aesthetic. Now based in Australia for nearly two decades, he continues to refine a body of work that bridges performance and fine art, celebrating beauty through contrast, shadow, and revelation.
