Artwork Description

The Balance In Between explores the ongoing tension between opposing forces in life, and our attempts to bring them into harmony — where neither fully overpowers the other. It reflects a mindful, evolving process, one that shifts and develops.

Through a dialogue between geometric and organic forms, this work mirrors the mindful, evolving process of balancing life’s contradictions. Whilst these forces are fundamentally different, they can coexist in a state of equilibrium—a process that matures and shifts through the different stages of our lives.

Geometric and organic shapes represent these opposing forces. However, with self compassion, patience and mindfulness, it is possible for these forces to be placed in harmony

Artist Bio

Cath Michael is a Brisbane-based fine artist whose practice explores nostalgia, memory and mid-century modern aesthetics through contemporary realism and geometric abstraction.

Known primarily for her detailed realist paintings, Cath depicts still life scenes, mid-century furniture, vintage objects and retro interiors. Her meticulous approach captures the clean lines, textures and distinctive geometry of her subjects, transforming familiar objects and spaces into visual records of cherished memories and bygone eras.

At the heart of Cath’s work is a fascination with the emotional connection we form with objects and places. Through her paintings, she seeks to preserve these fragments of the past and evoke a sense of warmth, familiarity and nostalgia.

More recently, Cath has expanded her practice into abstract geometric works, drawing inspiration from the bold forms and iconic supergraphics of the 1960s and 1970s. Bringing a fresh perspective to her enduring love of retro design, these pieces are designed to sit harmoniously within both contemporary and mid-century modern interiors.

Cath’s paintings have been selected as finalists in numerous art prizes and exhibited in galleries throughout Australia, gaining recognition for their detailed craftsmanship, nostalgic character and timeless appeal.
