Artwork Description

Frequently in our busy lives we forget that simplicity is often best and when things get hard, it is simplicity we always crave. Art can be much the same. While art with vibrant colours wildly splashed across a canvas Jackson Pollock style catches the eye, a simple paired back piece can be equally effective.

During a visit to my local art gallery I was struck by the strength of simplicity of a piece of art that used only three colours: black, white and a dash of green. After this visit I went home and paired this colour scheme with an an intricate pattern to create this drawing of a Birdwing Butterfly. I contemplated leaving it black and white but felt it needed just something more so I added a dash of red. Perfect!

Artist Bio

As a child Catherine drew continuously and very little escaped her artistic capture. As she got older, adult responsibilities took over and drawing was replaced by more mundane tasks such as paying bills, working, shopping, and housework. In 2020 Catherine had a health scare and required several months of treatment. To get through it she returned to what bought her joy as a child and so the second act of her artistic journey began.
During her treatment she discovered the benefits of creating art digitally. Principally that it is mess free and can be created on the lounge. Both factors proving most convenient while undergoing chemotherapy. After her treatment finished, Catherine continued to explore this medium and most of her art on this site has been drawn digitally on her iPad.
Just as the young Catherine was rarely without her pens and pencils, the older Catherine now goes everywhere with her iPad and she has employed it on many of her travelling and camping adventures to capture the vistas of her life.
Catherine has many great loves in life including family, friends, bushwalking, camping, travelling, creating and all things nature. She has a job she loves in the environmental field and it is to art and nature that she turns to when life starts to become overwhelming. The unique colours, plants, landscapes and animals of Australia and her travels serve as her muses.
For Catherine, as so often happens, out of the ashes of trauma, the opportunity to forge a new path has bloomed. She has only just started walking this new trail. She doesn’t know where her creative journey will take her and she doesn’t know where it will end but she is open to all possibilities and hopes her artistic travels will be long, windy and full colour! Always colour!
