Artwork Description

During Covid we were urged to avoid physical contact. The work is a slightly humorous look at a sterile approach to romance. This piece won the Anne and Fred Gardiner Award for Best Picture at the members exhibition, Toowoomba Art Society, 2020

Artist Bio

I was born in Yorkshire, UK and migrated to Australia in my early twenties. As a self taught artist I have worked with a range of mediums and genres. Recently I have explored the potential of cold wax medium to thicken oil paint and add texture and luminosity to landscape. I supplement my brush work with pallet knife, sponges, squeegees, and even old credit cards to capture mood and atmosphere. I am inspired by the works of J M W Turner. He urged the artist to focus on an emotional response to landscape and he celebrated the source of all light, the sun. It is easy to tap into my own emotional connection with the rich and rare beauty of the Australian landscape. I was mesmerised with the unique quality of Australia’s light fifty years ago when I first arrived on these shores, and I still am.
