Artwork Description

This piece was inspired by the beautiful plums of this summer and a vase which is a representation of a vessel I made last year. The influence comes from works by Morandi and one of my favourite Australian contemporary artists, Stacey McCall.

Artist Bio

Catherine is a contemporary mixed media artist, largely self taught with some online courses and workshops taken along the way. Her art explores the relationship between her growing up in the UK and relocating to Australia in early adulthood. Her practice blends memories and lived experience into work that uses different materials to reflect and represent the push/pull of two vastly different cultures. Her paintings are often seen in acrylic paints and a combination of collage and markers and oil sticks. She also makes various bowls and vessels which have incorporated the many pieces of fragments and gifts of belonging collected from both countries.

Themes of belonging, connection and everyday minutiae thread through her work, an invitation to reconcile the past, present and future in quiet conversation. Hopefully connecting to this deep desire needed by us all.

Now based in Sydney, Catherine continues to explore these themes in her new studio which is imbued with the essence of those strong characters who shaped her life, both sets of grandparents and her own family. For her, art is something to step into, where stories linger and life ebbs and flows are captured in all their forms.
