Artwork Description

After Bouguereau is a series of artworks rendered in archival ink on handmade paper and oil paint on canvas in miniature. The series takes as its starting point fragments of a large-scale painting made in nineteenth century France, placing those fragments under a contemporary lens.

By isolating a detail from the whole, Traicos asks what survives when grandeur is stripped away. What remains is form, feeling, and the trace of a hand. Working in tradition-based techniques, she draws a direct line between the original work and the present moment, collapsing the distance between then and now.

Artist Bio

Catherine Traicos is a visual and audio artist whose drawing practice is rooted in neoclassical form and time-honoured technique. She works with fragments of history as living material, bringing the past into conversation with the present. Her work is guided by flow and grounded in feeling, making what is felt visible on the page.

Traicos has been supported by Australia Council grants and her work has been featured in group and solo exhibitions across Australia and internationally, including Sweden and the United States. Whether working in sound or image, her practice begins and ends in the same place: the work itself.
