Artwork Description

This painting is earthbound. It's full of the pigments of the earth - gold and copper and touches of oranges with umber and reds under it all. It's very much a part of my internal search for the elements. I often look at this painting when I need to be reminded that even though I'm on the 3rd floor of an apartment building there's always the precious earth below me.

Artist Bio

“Somehow in the suburbs of my childhood I grew up utterly starved of visual art. Thankfully once I made it to high school the doors flung open and Art walked in. The gravely mundane turned into the sublime or thereabouts. Life became more than bearable. I became like a dog of Art – intensely loyal.”

Catherine Zimdahl’s abstract paintings are an attempt to find those ‘oceanic moments’ where time is lost and the tumult of the mind is harvested.
She wants to create expansive beauty. She wants art to be a secular sacred space.
As expected she believes Art is at war with the ordinary.

Resolution:Sublimate is her an ongoing series of abstracts concerned with chaos and beauty.
She has exhibited in group shows at Artsite Gallery. SENSORIUM (solo show) at Chrissie Cotter Gallery, supported by the Marrickville Council. Mixed media works MALTHUSIAN CHEQUE chosen for inclusion in the Unfolding Exhibition group show at ATVP 4.5. Formal art study at the National Art School (Foundation Year). Paintings exhibited in Walking the Street and published in Human Rights Defender. Her work is in a number of private collections. Zimdahl’s first solo exhibition was at Sidetrack Theatre (Marrickville Council initiative)
Catherine is also a writer for performance. Her plays have been produced around Australia and at many major theatre companies. Awards include Griffin Playwriting Award, Victorian Premier’s Literary Award, New Dramatists Exchange and AACTA Awards for Best Short Film and Best Screenplay. Catherine studied screenwriting at the Australian, Film, Television and Radio School where she was the recipient of the Qantas Travel Award graduate prize.
