My daughter and her partner came to stay with us from Geraldton, and she brought home a banksia bouquet from our local shop — banksias are one of her favourites. She meant to take them back with her but forgot them, so for us in Perth, they became a lovely reminder of her visit.
As they sat on my kitchen table, the vivid colours of the banksia and eucalyptus leaves were mesmerising — such a stunning Australian botanical. I was drawn to paint them.
I chose a deep blue-black background so the banksia's colours would pop: rich reds interwoven with orange and gold, complemented by leaves in cool green tones. Pixelated pops of colour dance across the banksia, playing warm against cool.
I worked in fluid acrylics, drying the canvas horizontally to create the banksia's rippling texture — a tactile quality that lets even a vision-impaired viewer feel the artwork's form. The piece is protected with three coats of gloss varnish, and both natural and artificial light bring out its depth and shimmer.
With its bold, saturated palette and glossy sheen, this piece brings warmth and energy into any room — a striking focal point for a living space, hallway or reading nook, where its colours can catch the light throughout the day.
