Artwork Description

Please be mindful that the background is officially "Soft Clouds" Grey from Jo Sonja paints, but in my opinion it appears lilac

This was my entry for the Glover Art Prize 2025. I wrote this poem as my formal application for the Prize...

Tasmania is a place of whispers and stories
that brings together sailors and locals alike.
A place of turmoil, passion and controversies.
When you see this island your new love crush will strike.

To choose a place to draw for the Glover Art Prize
was a hefty challenge. I think it is a shame
that I can’t draw them all so this is no surprise
I chose Tasman Island; the clue is in the name

The seabirds and fish life are oh so plentiful.
Let’s make the most of it before all that is left
is a falling down rock and a sick old seagull.
No doubt this will leave you angry, sad and bereft

The seas are rising and taking away with them
these epic rock needles that once stood defiant.
This dolerite cliff is crumbling, dying in pain
Maybe art and compassion will save this giant.

Artist Bio

Hi,

Thank you for dropping by...
My name is Cecile Michel and I am a pencil artist living in Paynesville, Australia.
I draw with graphite pencils and charcoal on stretched canvas to create strong contrasts and subtle shadows.
I love using the black and white theme to reinforce a sense of fun memories (like black and white photographs) but occasionally will throw in a few limited pieces containing colour... Just to keep thinks surprising and unexpected.
When I drew my first “Nostalgia” piece, I couldn’t stop smiling as I remembered the endless hours spent playing games with my cousin in our little village in the East of France; I wanted to share this feeling with you and hopefully you will find that object which is part of YOUR happy memories.
