When I shot this image, it started out as an experimentation. I wanted to capture the movement of the fabric in the cloak and create a 'Red Riding Hood' style piece, however, it came to mean so much more to me.
Not too long before I shot this, the world broke with the news of Sarah Everard’s murder by a UK policeman, Wayne Couzens. This horrible event sparked a worldwide debate where women started speaking up about feeling unsafe in their day-to-day lives.
What scared me about Sarah’s story, aside from the obvious, is how I used to walk alone at night along those same streets she was kidnapped from, during my time living in Clapham Common in London for a year in my early 20s. As I edited this image, I thought about how fortunate I felt that I got home safely all those nights I’d walked alone, and how wrong that is. I should have the right to walk alone at night without fearing for my safety, as should every person.
This Red Riding Hood concept became a representation of this movement brought about by Sarah’s death. Of a woman’s right to walk the world alone without fear.
This image represents a powerful story in taking a stance against the bad in the world, and standing up for your rights.
