My research originated from a collection of handheld retro items and textiles. Using these objects has been a way of gathering thoughts and satisfying my curiosities around tactility and object making. I look at a playful way of deconstructing and assembling cuttings from second hand Australian House and Garden magazines to create illusory space. These realms feel distorted and overwhelming yet comfortably inhabitable through the description of interior furnishings and objects. Informed by 1960s hard edge abstraction and an investigation into the domestic experience through craft and sewing, my work challenges traditional representational canons and skews perceptions of familiar spaces. My paintings are also a way of investigating the formal dominance of colour and pattern which gesture to the trends and style choices of the 60s, locating my painting in a retro sphere.
