‘Claudia’ was inspired by my love of one of the great Italian Masters, Michelangelo da Caravaggio. He is famous for painting figures that disappear into the shadows, you could say he was the founder of ‘Hollywood’ lighting way before its time, the Renaissance era, circa late 1500’s and early 1600’s. I was lucky enough to go to Florence, Italy in 2011 and studied at the Angel Academy of Art during the summer where we were taught Caravaggio’s painting techniques. When I came home I was so inspired by my trip I organised a photoshoot, selected this beautiful pose and then painted 'Claudia' which took many weeks to complete. Not having very much experience painting in this style, I was very happy with the results. The red satin fabric is so rich and vibrant it really brings it to life. This painting would be wonderful in a 'grouped' collection of small pieces, mixed with modern and contemporary works.
