Autumn Comes to The Lily Pond.

The end of the season rolls across the lily pond as Autumn heralds the changing of the guard. All the abundant growth from the long days of summer begin new roles from above and below.
The last of the water lilies reach upward to talk to the sun but what returns are the slow and inevitable falling leaves. Autumn has come to the pond and the sun moves lower in the sky. The reflections are long and silent as the aquatic life has bunkered down or moved to the last resting place in the mud below.
The water surface is taught and subdued. The water holds the leaves, dust, insects and the odd feather in suspended animation waiting for the winds to disrupt the equilibrium.
The pond prepares in Autumn for what the winter will bring.

The early morning yellow sunlight is shinning through the trees in the background and lighting the waterlily pond in the foreground. This is a tall vertical ( golden mean proportion) oil painting of a water lilies growing in a pond. It is a bright day with the bright blue sky reflecting on the water. We can see deep into the foreground water to the weeds and purple shadows below. On the surface the light dances across the green lily pads, highlighting the green pads and orange leaves that have fallen from above to take us across to other side. This is a large horizontal oil painting on canvas measuring 122x91 cm (4x3ft) lily pads in a pond. Along the horizontal middle line the pads are bright green, before receding into the background.

Ultramarine and cerulean blue water reflect the colour of the sky and white clouds into the foreground. In the bottom left corner there is tangled of dying stem and "drowning leaves".

Rather than a romantic depiction of lily pads this painting is bold and colourful, containing all of the life cycles of the lily pads, from flowers to dying .he lily pads have been bright curved discs of exuberant green for most of the season. With the Autumn cool comes the curling of the lily pads and change in colours. The last of the flowers and the myriad of buzzing and wriggling life above and below the water line are disappearing. The lily pads move from the excitable green of spring to bunker green, with some clocking out into golds, copper and brown. The Autumn stretch is upon the pond and the distant shadows begin to slide further across the surface. Leaf fall in the twilight to remind us all things must pass…until Spring

The back waters of our local lagoon (Avoca Lagoon) secludes itself from visitors and tourists. Even locals sometimes.
Far from the crashing beach entrance and the energetic dogs and noise of the children, this is where the quietness of water, light and shadows come to rest around sleepy islands.
All different physical elements but all appear to be in peaceful balance with each other. Time to sit, draw and let the surroundings paint themselves.

All the elements seem to be sharing part of themselves with each other and the shadows are only extensions of light, water and a mirage of an island. Phantoms of a physicality that draws you into illusions of light, space, shade and shadows.
The Back Waters have their own magic that is best experienced without the crowds and a timepiece.
This painting has been inspired by the view from the lookout (Lincoln Rock) at Wentworth Falls in the Blue Mountains NSW. It forms part of the Blue Mountain Series series of that relates to the blue mountains.

The afternoon shadows envelop most of the landscape, imparting a sense of tranquility and quietude. However, the higher peaks and hills in the distance are untouched by the shadows. Bathed in golden light, these elevated forms seem to emanate warmth and radiance. The light, elegantly traces its way across the terrain and extends to the distant ridges.

In the foreground, small native shrubs, red grevillea and yellow
wattle, stretch out beneath the observer's feet.
Their textured details contrast against the backdrop of the deep and shaded valley.

The tranquility of the valley, the radiant hills, and the gnarly native shrubs collectively inspire a sense of awe and wonder.Horizontal Lily pads floating in a blue Pond.
The sunlight is streaming through the reeds at the far end of the lily pond.
