This is a night scene in Leederville with green and pink neon restaurant lights mixing with the orange sodium vapour street lamps. I painted this after walking there with a friend. There were very few people on the streets at the time and the atmosphere was eerie and mysterious. I wasn’t happy with the original painting and angrily added flares of colour to make it more vibrant and interesting. The overall effect is now that the trees and road are on fire and there’s flowing water coming from a back alley surging forward to put the fire out. Perhaps that night would have been more interesting if there was real fire and torrent of water on the streets but then again, sometimes it’s nice to just have a quiet walk around Perth.
