Approach and Influences
Chris generally takes a figurative approach to various genres, but also works imaginatively to explore memories and random associations for more personal work. He finds plein-air and studio-based approaches congenial to exploring how the random movement of people and changing patterns of colour and light can inform images. Best to let the paintings speak for themselves.
Influences are pretty much Catholic in admiring painterly work which catches something of life and imagination ranging from El Greco to John Singer Sargent, from the Venetians to the Ash Can School; painters who show verve and integrity, intelligence and spirit from Francis Bacon to Elizabeth Cummings and many others. The challenge is to let influences lead to honest work.
