Artwork Description

This is a working drawing created from my public sculpture that stands 4.5 metres high- 10 ton- Tannum Sands Queensland. It was fabricated from scrap metal sources from all of the industries throughout Calliope Shire. The work is symbolic of the fragile balance between nature and industry though out the shire, and the harmonious relationship that is forged for each to co-exist.
The Millennium Esplanade was officially opened on Austra- lia Day 2000 by Calliope Shire Mayor, Cr George Creed. Calliope Shire Council also chose to launch its new logo, the Seahorse, in conjunction with the opening. The seahorse fossil was created in commemoration of the new millennium, and stands as a monument to creative and recycling solutions for future generations and the delicate beauty of our natural and industrial environment.
Since the completion of the project in December 1999, the Millennium Esplanade has received overwhelming public support and recognition from throughout the region and interstate. Winner of the Southern Reef Tourism Awards, and more recently announced Central Queensland/Wide Bay’s Cleanest beach and regional winner of Queensland’s friendliest beach, the project has set a benchmark in Central Queensland for the development of public urban space in sensitive environmental settings.

“While working with found objects over the last 25 years, I have found myself drawn to, and engaging with a broad cross section of forms from varying industries such as farming, automotive, industrial, marine and aviation.
Certain shapes have provoked different creative responses at different points in my career.
The interaction of objects with nature, man and time, are of particular interest.
