Release

Capturing a moment in time of release. I truly challenging painting to create as the paint fought with me the entire time to create what this became to be. I had other ideas initially but this ended up resolved here as an explosive release. A current state of my psychology at the time. A work I am very proud of, but also a reminder of attacking the canvas and winning.

Clayton Gunn is an Australian painter based in regional Victoria, working primarily in abstract and atmospheric expressionism. His practice explores the intersection of inner experience, spirituality, and the natural world, translating complex emotional and psychological states into colour, movement, and form.

Working predominantly in oil on canvas, Gunn builds layered compositions that shift between turbulence and restraint. His paintings often carry a sense of tension and release—fields of energy broken by moments of clarity—reflecting both internal conflict and the search for peace. Themes of endurance, faith, and transformation are central to his work.

Influenced by both landscape and lived experience, Gunn’s paintings are not literal depictions but emotional environments. They are intended to be felt as much as seen, inviting the viewer into a contemplative space where meaning emerges over time.

Recent works mark a move toward greater cohesion and confidence in structure, with a focus on atmosphere, scale, and visual balance. His evolving body of work positions him as a distinctive emerging voice within contemporary Australian abstract painting.
