Wagner's epic Opera - The Ring Cycle: Götterdämmerung

Brünnhilde's sister Waltrute comes to entreat Brünnhilde to return the ring (that she'd been given by Siegfried as a symbol of his love) to the Rhein-Maidens, but she refuses.
The Rhein-Maidens lament the loss of their treasure and on seeing Siegfried beg him to return the Ring, warning him that he will surely perish if he refuses. He merely laughs at them. Alberich's son Hagen, is urged by his father to regain the Ring. Hagen kills Siegfried in his attempt but does not get the Ring.
Tearfully Brünnhilde orders the erection of a funeral pyre and after taking the Ring from Siegfried's finger, she sets fire to the pyre, mounts her horse and rides into the towering fire to die with her lover.
The Rhein River now rises to extinguish the flames and with it come the Rhein-Maidens seeking the Ring. Flosshilde retrieves it and she and her two sisters drag Hagen down to the depths.

The painting portrays in the distance, Valhalla now enveloped in flames as the Gods await their fate. The chord of destiny is broken and the Ring is sinking back to its rightful home.
