After traversing the lower Murray in the Murray Princess and hearing stories of the paddle steamers on the Murray Darling, I was inspired to paint the glory of the Murray itself with a paddle steamer that epitomised the heyday of river travel on the Murray. Using a Public Domain picture of PS Pevensey I was able to make it the focus of the work. Being the main actor in the narrative, the boat added a human event to the painting - the pilot and the passengers enter the narrative as they play their roles in Murray River transportation.
Having considered the work of artists like Cezanne, I was persuaded to paint the main shapes in the landscape with a minimal use of brush strokes,
