Pine Cones

The incredible shape and texture of pinecones are so complex and beautiful to draw. It's that time of the year that we see them scattered underneath the canopies of the trees when we travel up the Bruce Highway heading to the Sunshine Coast. I have very fond memories of stopping near the towering rows of pine trees when our children were young and all of us scouring the undergrowth for the best ones to use them for our Christmas decorations.

Drawing these pinecones on drafting film with my beloved coloured pencils allowed me to capture the crispness of the shapes and the depths of colour the viewer can see in each cone.
Drawn in 100% lightfast and archival coloured pencil on acid free drafting film while on the reverse side I have used a watercolour background. The transulcency of drafting film allows the watercolours to have a muted soft look.This artwork has been drawn using professional coloured pencils on Grafix acid free drafting film. All materials will last a lifetime if framed behind uv glass. For me, drawing is nurturing, empowering and a therapeutic escape from the daunting realities of life. From picking up the pencil as a young girl, to escaping into my art in the present, it has become wholeheartedly ingrained in me and part of who I am. I introduce myself as a Representational Artist. While the end result of my creating may seem like realism, it is in fact just a representation of what I have perceived as real.

I have gathered my skills from constant practice, engaging with other artists and experimenting with various techniques. Throughout the years I've discovered my love for the detail I can create using pencils, whether it's coloured, pastel, graphite or charcoal. Pencils allow me to take control of what emerges from my blank surface. Creating an animal or landscape that comes to life is mesmerising, I crave to see what textures, shadows, forms, lines and tones will merge together to create a life-like piece of art. I love hearing from my clients that my art has transported them into the eyes of the subject or they have found peace and happiness just by seeing the work on their wall.
