Nightfall

'Nightfall' is inspired by one of my favourite times of the day at nightfall when the last light hangs over the landscape and you suddenly see those really beautiful colours, light effects and interesting shadow shapes.
I live overlooking the Peel Harvey Estuary and am inspired daily by ever-changing views of the estuary waters, wildlife and vegetation including the old tree skeletons that are scattered along its shoreline.
Collage is a technique where materials are glued to the artwork surface to achieve sculptural texture and detail. Rice Paper is a beautiful paper, available in long rolls, and perfect for collage to describe the shape of the paperbark tree trunks, branches and twigs.
My process was to first sketch in the scene, then tear and cut up the rice-paper and painstaking glue the paper all over the shapes where I desired the 3D effect. Next I painted in a free flowing sky with abstract qualities using Artists acrylics mixed with painting mediums. After the collaged areas and background dried, more details were added throughout the painting. My acrylic paintings are always finished with a coat of fixer medium to seal and isolate the painted layers before applying final protective coats of removable varnish.

Corrine Rapley (born 1962 in Donnybrook, Western Australia) is an Australian landscape painter based in the Peel Region, south of Perth. With over 30 years of professional practice, she produces luminous oil paintings that highlight the play of light across coast, water, sky, and the wider natural landscape.
From 1993–2008 she lived in Tom Price in the Pilbara, where she lectured in art at Pilbara TAFE and founded Pebble Mouse Studio Art Gallery. Her work was recognised with the Watercolour – Pilbara Landscape Award at the Cossack Art Awards (2002).
In Mandurah, 2015 she was selected as Artist in Residence at Contemporary Art Spaces Mandurah. The City of Mandurah acquired an artwork following her 2016 solo exhibition Whispers on the Wind and Water.
Recent solo exhibitions include Waterviews (Gallows Gallery, Mosman Park and at Alcoa Mandurah Art Gallery, 2021), Impressions of Light (Lost Eden Creative, Dwellingup, 2023), Golden Light (Ellenbrook Arts HQ, 2025) and Radiance (Terrace Greenhouse, South Fremantle, Feb–Mar 2026).
In 2025 she curated a community art exhibition at official opening of Dawesville Community Centre for City of Mandurah.
Corrine is a member of West Australian Society of Arts, Mandurah Plein Air Artists Inc., and Portrait Group Mandurah.
