- Corrine Rui Wen – Contemporary Visual Artist -
-
I am Corrine Rui Wen, a Chinese Australian artist based in Brisbane, Australia. My artistic journey is an ongoing exploration of imagination, perception, and the world around me. While I am deeply influenced by surrealism, I also create works that depict landscapes, architecture, animals and human figures—pieces that capture the beauty of the everyday. Whether it’s a dreamlike composition or a more grounded representation, my goal is always to create art that resonates, sparks curiosity, and invites deeper reflection.

- From Film to Fine Art -
-
My background in both business and film has shaped the way I see and create art. I hold a postgraduate degree in International Business from the University of Newcastle and a bachelor’s degree in Film Production from Edith Cowan University. Filmmaking introduced me to the power of composition, light, and storytelling—elements that still influence my visual work today. However, I found mainstream narratives limiting, often shaped by commercial demands rather than artistic freedom. That realization led me to pursue fine art, where I could fully express my thoughts and emotions without constraints.

- Artistic Approach & Philosophy -
-
A significant part of my work explores surrealism—a way to question reality and visualize the subconscious. Inspired by the Zen philosophy of Qingyuan Xingsi, which describes life as a journey of seeing, transcending, and ultimately returning to a deeper understanding, I use surrealist elements to create dreamlike spaces where perception and illusion merge. These works invite viewers to pause, reflect, and interpret meaning in their own way.
-
At the same time, my artistic practice is not confined to surrealism alone. I also create paintings that focus on landscapes, architecture, animals, and human figures—sometimes as studies, sometimes as finished works. These pieces allow me to explore different techniques, moods, and subjects, and they hold just as much value in my practice. Some of them stem from personal experiences, while others are inspired by my surroundings or artistic experiments. Whether it’s a surrealist scene or a more traditional painting, I see every piece as part of my evolving artistic voice.

- Mediums & Inspirations -
-
My work primarily involves acrylic and watercolor, two mediums that offer distinct possibilities for artistic expression. Acrylic allows for bold contrasts and textural depth, while watercolor captures subtle shifts in light and color. Each medium brings something unique to my process, and I enjoy switching between them depending on the subject and atmosphere I want to convey.
-
I draw inspiration from various sources—art history, literature, nature, and everyday life. While surrealist pioneers such as Salvador Dalà and Giorgio de Chirico influence my conceptual work, I also admire classical and impressionist artists for their ability to capture emotion through color and composition. My surroundings, whether a quiet street, a striking landscape, or a fleeting human expression, often spark ideas that I bring into my paintings.

- The Role of Art in My Life -
-
For me, art is both an intellectual and emotional pursuit. It is a way to explore ideas, express feelings, and communicate without words. My work is not about rigid categories—whether surrealist or representational, conceptual or observational. Instead, I see my practice as a continuous dialogue between imagination and reality, discipline and spontaneity.
-
I create because I love the process—experimenting, discovering, and refining. While I have personal themes and artistic interests, I also believe in keeping my work open-ended, allowing room for growth and new inspirations. Some of my works are deeply symbolic, while others are simply about capturing a fleeting moment of beauty.
-
As I continue to develop my practice, I aim to create art that speaks to people in different ways—whether it evokes emotion, invites interpretation, or simply brings visual enjoyment. I welcome viewers into my world, where each piece, regardless of style, carries a part of my journey and perspective.
