‘Peony’ is an expression of femininity; equally beautiful and vulnerable in its composition. Using a limited colour palette of deep corals, crimsons and fuchsias layered over pastel tones, this piece is filled with mixed media details; from delicate charcoals, to vivid acrylics and transparent layers of oils.
The peony is traditionally linked to healing and love, and is representative of the huge personal and artistic growth I have had over the past year. The petals are delicate and almost transparent in areas, opening outwards and expressing an openness. The most painterly, layered areas, are starkly contrasted by the exposed background layer on the woman’s face, symbolic of the vulnerability that comes with growth. Her gaze is outward and upward.
