As part of my series 'Art legends through time', I wanted this homage to Frida Kahlo to capture Frida's strength, her connection to her homeland and her ability to find beauty amidst pain - rooted in her history and yet leaving a legacy for the future.
I aimed to portray this iconic Mexican artist in a way that reflects her heritage, blending elements of her identity with a sense of nostalgia and timelessness. Frida remains an enduring force within the landscape that stretches behind her.
This painting also portrays the resilience and beauty that can emerge even in the face of extreme challenges.

Grace, Roots and Strength is one of four works in my 'Art legends through time' series.
This series was inspired by exhibitions I attended in 2023, including Frida & Diego in Adelaide, visits to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, Kusama's Infinity Mirrors in London and Dalรญ sculptures around Adelaide.
I started 'Art legends through time' thinking about how the past, present and possibilities for the future converge, while highlighting each artist for their contributions and impact on the art world.
My original vision was to capture their likenesses in mid-century, retro futuristic landscapes where the past and future merge, reflecting the worlds they lived in and the lasting influence they continue to have on art and culture.
As the paintings evolved, they each took on their own distinct personality.
These four artists - Yayoi Kusama, Salvador Dali, Frida Kahlo and Vincent Van Gogh - though separated by geography and time, each pushed personal and creative boundaries, becoming symbols of resilience and artistic exploration.
While referencing their iconic works, I wanted to celebrate them as timeless visionaries - artists whose influence continues to inspire and connect across so many generations.
