In this homage to Yayoi Kusama, I wanted to step into a world that reflects both her internal landscape and her external creations.
Among the many famous artists in commercial merchandise, Kusama and Frida Kahlo are often the only women represented - a detail that piqued my interest when I began this series.
While I knew very little about Kusama at the start, my research led the painting to evolve in unexpected ways.
In her work Kusama invites us to lose ourselves in her patterns, reminding us that each of us is only a dot in the vast scheme of things. In this painting I sought to capture her visual language while conveying a quiet sense of isolation and peace.

Within Her Sphere is one of four works in my 'Art legends through time' series.
This series was inspired by exhibitions I attended in 2023, including Frida & Diego in Adelaide, visits to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, Kusama's Infinity Mirrors in London and Dalรญ sculptures around Adelaide.
I started 'Art legends through time' thinking about how the past, present and possibilities for the future converge, while highlighting each artist for their contributions and impact on the art world.
My original vision was to capture their likenesses in mid-century, retro futuristic landscapes where the past and future merge, reflecting the worlds they lived in and the lasting influence they continue to have on art and culture. As the paintings evolved, they each took on their own distinct personality.
These four artists - Yayoi Kusama, Salvador Dali, Frida Kahlo and Vincent Van Gogh - though separated by geography and time, each pushed personal and creative boundaries, becoming symbols of resilience and artistic exploration.
While referencing their iconic works, I wanted to celebrate them as timeless visionaries - artists whose influence continues to inspire and connect across so many generations.
