Inspiration
Elton was one of the first people I drew when I started out drawing in 2020, and he’s such an inspiration that I had to pay homage to him again. He has raised over $200 million for the fight against AIDs. He revolutionised rock by incorporating piano into his music and his performances were electric! He truely epitomises the glam rock era of the 70s and his fashion statements are iconic ❤️
Process
To create these original paintings, I first prep the paper with a collage of various vintage papers such as musical scores, comic books, dictionaries, encyclopaedias and biographies. The second layer is a clear gesso base to draw on top of then a charcoal sketch mapping out the lights and darks of the portrait, first with vine charcoal and secondly with compressed charcoal and charcoal pencils. This is then sealed with spray fixative, and time for the final details using Winsor & Newton oil paints to make the portrait pop and add contrast between the person and the background. Once I’m fully happy with the portrait I then fill the remaining area with either black or white acrylic paint and spray paint on the playing card details! I’m so happy with how they look I hope you love them as much as I do xx
The Series
The ‘Royal Flush’ series is an offspring of my favourite paintings from the ‘Get Messy Challenge’, and the series is only just beginning! I have so many ideas of how to expand on this collection that I can’t wait to share with you.
