A personal approach to Art and Nature
FOOLS LIKE ME
With a nod to Joyce Kilmer
I think that I will ever see
The poetry in rocks, and cliffs, and trees.
Sculptured into bold new forms
From abstract dreams of line and shape
Unpredictable, breathtaking, timeless.
And they laugh (or cry)
As we pass by
Looking but not seeing,
Listening but not hearing,
Distracted by blaring sounds of music
Or mesmerizing lines of lifeless text,
Oblivious to the arms of trees
Stretched out in invitation
To quietude, to peace, to renewal.
While imitative art is made
By fools like me
Only God can make a rock,
Carve out a cliff or shape a tree.
But moved by the intimacy
Of closer contemplation,
Through our crude but heartfelt imitation,
We may, in some small way,
Touch the Divine.

It all began the first time I downloaded my initial digital images for editing. With the original 3Dimensional shots ‘flattened’ into 2D Images, I was astounded to see new shapes, creatures, groups come alive and the whole landscape burst into life with fresh meaning. Just a happy accident of spatial distortion? The flight of fancy of an overactive imagination? Perhaps, but it has been a life affirming journey for me - “Two different dimensional paths diverged before me. I chose the one more interesting, and that has made all the difference.”
Consequently, I have begun a series of mixed-media works where I attempt to bring to light the stories I see/feel hidden in the Australian landscape (e.g. Ghostly Gums, Bleeding Gums, The Rocks cry out, All creatures great and small). Join me then as I sneak backstage and pull the curtain on Nature’s hidden dramas.
