Kazu

Last one for 2024, and it's one of my favourite subjects, the magpie.

This piece was primarily created with paper and adhesive. A little paint was added in areas for contrast (beak, back and grass mainly).

The paper elements have been taken from discarded or damaged books, junk mail, kids books, packaging materials, brochures and vintage magazines. The paper elements combined with some painted areas create a layered textural surface.

3 coats of matte varnish have been applied to protect the artwork.

The artwork has a wire at the back, the edges are collaged, so Kazu is ready to hang. Or you can add a frame during purchase through Bluethumb.

Based near Wollongong on the NSW East Coast of Australia, Darren King is a multidisciplinary artist working across collage, printmaking, mixed media, and painting. Over the past five years, he has honed a distinctive visual language that merges traditional and contemporary techniques.

His art captures the beauty of the ordinary and evokes a playful nostalgia, celebrating the local, the joyous, the tasty or the long-forgotten.

King’s work has been featured on Selling Houses Australia (Annandale 2025), earned multiple art awards, and been exhibited in numerous group shows and art prizes.
His artworks are held in private collections worldwide.
