Although I paint recognizable images, I am not trying to paint an objective representation.
My images represent a subjective vision where each image allows the viewer the freedom of making their own unique interpretation of the work.
Everything visual is basically a symbol, so a landscape is not only a visual reference, but can also represent a larger and wider emotional response similar to music.
All art is open to interpretation, but more unrealistic artwork allows the imagination a wider vista into which to roam.
This can be achieved with shape, color and form, exciting the imagination and bringing forth ideas of beauty, mysticism, transcendence etc.
I always tend to start from a representational image such as a landscape or a photo and then make the image more abstract as I proceed.
Although I am attracted to abstract art because the meaning is subjective, allowing both the artist and the viewer the absolute freedom of expression. I for my own personal reasons always need at least one visual reference to the real world.
