'Sensual Sepik' by David Kirkland photographer. Photographed in the Cook Islands.
Still today, young men along the Sepik River of Papua New Guinea are scarred in a painful coming-of-age ritual to represent the crocodile. Hundreds of incisions are made into their torso, before the wounds are packed with mud from the Sepik River to form callouses, patterned into the shape of a crocodile head. I've photographed the initiates several times - their quiet, gentle demeanour a contradication to the representation of force and power carved into their bodies. But, somewhere in between, I've found a sensuality and beauty I'd like to think has been captured in this photograph.
