I enjoy the serene quality of this portrait I captured of a young Solomon Island woman. She was working for a small resort - San Bis Island - in the Western Province of the Solomons, and allowed me to photograph her. As a tourism photographer, I'm rarely given the time to slow down and produce portraits like this, so it was a pleasure to capture it.

Most of us who have travelled the South Pacific have returned with experiences fondly recalled - of splashing in the sparkling waters surrounding one of its many islands, of sitting on a pristine beach lined with palm trees at sunset, of the fascinating insights we've been given into its remarkable cultures, of the laughter of its children and the warmth of the people we met during our journey.

International photographer David Kirkland has spent more than 20 years wandering the South Pacific with a camera in hand and, to date, 14 books have been published of his travels.
