In this age of the Anthropocene, humankind has impacted the planet irrevocably and in unprecedented ways. Through my art I hope to raise awareness about the ongoing global waste crisis: our recycling systems are broken and the earth is drowning in a sea of plastic. My self-portrait depicts me surrounded by a deluge of single use plastic. These plastic items are used for only a few minutes, yet they will be on this planet for hundreds or even thousands of years. It is estimated only 9% of all plastic ever made has been recycled. It is accumulating on the land and in our oceans, endangering wildlife, polluting the environment and ultimately threatening humanity itself – just for a few minutes of convenience.
This painting was a semi-finalist in the Lester Prize for Portraiture 2019.
